Play: - Setting: May 2, 1961, Washington D.C. in the home of Jasmine Lewis. A furious mother argues with her daughter about her going with the freedom riders to New Orleans-
Momma- You've gone ahead and done it now. I put up with the marches and the rallies and the speeches, but you finally lost it. I don't give a rat's behind what those men in that God forsaken on that hill gotta say; you AINT GETTIN ON THE BUS!
- Jasmine shuffles her weight uncomfortablely. She meets her mother's eye.-
Jasmine: I know youre worried Momma, but I can promise you, I'll be fine. Look, Mister Frank said that on every stop I can call you to check in.
Momma: With what phone? You know them white devils are going to stone you as soon as you step off the bus. - she grabs the dishes on the table and throws them into the sink.-
Momma: Why are you setting yourself up for destruction, child?
Jasmine: -confidentiality-Because if I don't take a chance, who will? -walks out
-curtanin closes-
- May 4th: the day of the ride. Families are kissing and hugging in case of never seeing them again. Momma has a look of worry on her face.
Momma- now baby, are you sure?
Jasmine: I'm positive. I have to do this. It must be done. -slight smile-
-momma returns the smile-
Momma: Okay. I wanna meet the man who's taking care of my baby.
- Jasmine takes her mother sleeve, leading her to Mr. Frank.
Mr. Frank: well isn't this a nice surprise! I'm so glad you could make it. We had so many drop out I didnt know if we would have enough! - shakes momma-
Momma- its nice to meet you too. I just wanted to see if my baby would be alright.
Mr. Frank: I promise you she'll be safe. - looks at Jasmine- are you ready to make history kiddo?
Jasmine: -proudly- why yes, yes I am!
