literary devices

Antithesis- the placing of a sentence or one of its parts against another to which it is opposed to form a balanced contrast of ideas

~direct opposite: the complete or exact opposite of something

~contrasting proposition: a proposition that is the opposite of another already proposed thesis

 

Apophasis~ a device where the writer brings up a subject by either denying it or denying that it should be brought up

Aporia~ to be at a lost, impassable, inclined to doubt

Aposiopesis~ where a sentence is deliberately broken off and left unfinished, the ending to be supplied by the imagination

Appositive~ a noun, noun phrase, or series of nouns placed next to another word or phrase to identify or rename it
